We are a Sustainable Salon!

Sustainable Salons is a social enterprise that help its salon members reduce their impact on the planet. Sustainable Salons rescues up to 95% of salon resources from landfill and finds repurposing solutions that benefit the environment and give back to our community!

Plastic packaging, bottles, and bags are sent to specialist plastics recyclers where they're cleaned and made into various products, such as outdoor furniture and new packaging. This keeps plastics in circulation and out of our oceans!

All aluminum foil, colour tubes, cardboard, paper, magazines, razor blades, unwanted tools, and select disposables are sold for recycling. The proceeds from these recycled resources are donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest to provide meals for hungry people. A full head of foils provides a quarter of a meal to someone in need!

Hair clippings are collected from the salon floor and stuffed into stockings to make Hair Booms that will help clean up oil spills along our coastlines. Hair is also repurposed in local community gardens for composting or used by colleges and artists to create sustainable art installations.

Any left-over chemicals will be sent to chemical recycling plants where it is neutralized and turned into water. This recycled water is used in roadworks and construction.

Every ponytail matters!

Sustainable Salons collect all ponytails and takes them back to the depot for sorting and distribution. The minimum length for donation is 20cm. Hair can be coloured or uncoloured.

All hair clippings and ponytails shorter than 20cm are sent for repurposing in Sustainable Salons' composting programs, sustainable art installations, and for research into the Hair Boom Project.

Ponytails between 20cm and 35.5cm are sent to various local wig-makers who work with their local charities and hospitals to create charitable wigs for those suffering from cancer, alopecia and other medically-induced hair-loss conditions.

Ponytails longer than 35.5cm AND uncoloured (virgin hair) are very special! These go directly to charitable organizations where they contribute to wigs for kids and adults. And because they're so valuable, they help raise money to fund other life-changing programs!

What does this mean for you?

Each time you visit a sustainable salon, your service bill will include a small fee of just $3 that minimizes the ecological footprint of your visit today. This small contribution makes a big difference in supporting our community with keeping New Zealand a little greener!
